TIME OF REPENTANCE

Leviticus 23:23 The Feast of Trumpets, celebrated on the first day of the seventh month, belongs to the third and final set of God’s seven feasts. This third group of feasts consists of the Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement and Feast of Tabernacles. They are known collectively as the Feast of Tabernacles.
The Lord said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites: ‘On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of sabbath rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts.’”

Ten days before Moses returned to the camp, the Israelites prepared for his arrival by blowing trumpets and recalling their repentance.

Origin of the Feast of Trumpets

After receiving the Ten Commandments from God, Moses descended Mount Sinai to rejoin the Israelites. Upon reaching the camp, Moses caught sight of the Israelites worshiping a golden calf, and became so furious he threw the stone tablets to the ground, breaking them to pieces.

The Israelites realized their wrongdoings and repented. God called Moses to Mount Sinai to give him a second set of stone tablets. Moses stayed on the mountain for another forty days and nights. But ten days before Moses returned to the camp, the Israelites prepared for his arrival by blowing trumpets and recalling their repentance. God commanded the Israelites to commemorate these ten days as the Feast of Trumpets and the day Moses finally came down the mountain as the Day of Atonement.

Leviticus 23:23-25 The LORD said to Moses, ”Say to the Israelites: ‘On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. Do no regular work, but present an offering made to the LORD by fire.’”

Meaning of the Feast of Trumpets

The Bible explains that the Old Testament law was only a shadow.

Hebrews 10:1 (NLT) The old system under the Law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves.

In other words, the laws established during the time of Moses were prophecies—including the Feast of Trumpets. For prophecy to be fulfilled, one day can equal one year (Ezekiel 4:6). Thus, the ten days of trumpet blasts represented ten years of preaching to herald the second coming of Christ.

William Miller led the Advent Movement for Jesus’ Second Coming from 1834 to 1844. For ten years—until the fulfillment of the Day of Atonement on October 22, 1844—people preached about Christ’s second coming.

Thus, God fulfills His work even using those who do not know about the feasts of God.

Luke 19:40 (NCV) But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if my followers didn’t say these things, then the stones would cry out.”
